Chimonanthus praecox
Local name: Wintersweet or Japanese Allspice
A family member of the Carolina Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus). Though the names have some resemblances, the plants itself are not alike at all. Chimonanthus flowers during the winter/early spring, prior to the new shoots with sweet scented flowers (yellow with a crimson hart). This is quite an exquisite shrub that requires the needed attention. To achieve the highest flowering results, the shrub prefers a spot next to a wall (facing south) or in a sheltered and warm spot in the garden. The more warmth this plant receives during winter, the more flowers she will produce.
